Their Comfort Isn’t Your Problem, But Your Authenticity Is

Last night, my friend Forrest and I saw a new play at La Jolla Playhouse featuring the phenomenal Sasha Velour. Amidst a sea of unforgettable moments, one line struck me hard:

"Their comfort is not your responsibility.”

This powerful statement is a call to shed the façade we often wear at work. How many times have we left parts of ourselves behind—whether in a physical parking lot or a virtual meeting space—to fit in with cultural expectations? This self-censorship doesn’t just hurt our well-being; it stifles our creativity and dims our brilliance.

So, with all due respect to the dazzling Ms. Velour, I’d add: Their comfort isn’t your problem, but your authenticity is.

When we allow our true selves to shine through, we not only become more impactful but also inspire others to do the same. Embracing authenticity fosters a more inclusive and dynamic work environment where everyone can be their genuine selves.

How will you show up as a little more of yourself today?
