Lessons from the Dance Floor

I recently stepped out of my comfort zone and onto the dance floor in a class with the Atomic Groove Fly Girls, a local band with an energetic group of women dedicated to music, fun, and dance. I’ll be honest—at first, I felt like a complete dork, out of sync and awkward. But as I looked around, I realized something beautiful was happening. The room was full of women, all doing their best, all having fun, and most importantly, all being supportive of each other.

The instructor gave us a piece of wisdom that stuck with me: “The way you do this class is the way you do everything.” It wasn’t about being perfect; it was about showing up, trying hard, doing the best you can, and embracing the experience. It was a simple but powerful reminder that translates so well to work and life.

It’s funny how something like a dance class can hold up a mirror to how we move through the rest of our lives. There are days we nail the choreography and others where we trip over our own feet. But in every step, there’s a chance to learn, grow, and laugh—whether you’re dancing or leading. The joy isn’t in doing it perfectly, it’s in showing up fully and supporting each other along the way.

While I have a long way to go before I could ever be a "real" Fly Girl, it was fun to try something different and push my edges a bit.

How about you? Tried anything new lately?
