The Importance of a Support System

I lost a job…I’m launching a book…My heart just got broken…I’m moving to another country…I feel so lost and I don’t know what to do…

These and so many other “life” events are just some of what has come up within my divinity circle that I have met with monthly for the past 5 years.

What is a divinity circle, you might ask?

We chant, we meditate, we have ceremonies – fun, witchy stuff. We get together one Sunday a month and once a year we head out of town for a 3 day retreat. At its core, and why this circle of women has become such a strong force in my life, is we have each other’s backs.

Every joyful moment, every sad or tragic event, the mundane and the marvelous, these women have been witness to all of it. We support each other when we are laughing hysterically, AND when there is snot running down our cheeks from crying so hard. We can each be wholly and completely ourselves and there is no judgement. There might be gentle suggestions, or brainstorming a different approach, or bringing the woo-woo and calling in the goddesses as an additional support system (it works, I promise!), but never any judgment.

Multiple studies point to the importance of a support system. If you want to start your own, there’s tons of information on “circles” (nonbinary circles, LGBTQ+ circles, men’s circles etc). Ours works well because we have been explicit about ground rules:

·      No cross talk

·      Ask permission to give feedback

·      Keep a timer so everyone gets an equal amount of time to speak (and be ready to throw it out the window when someone needs it).

One of the biggest things we do is CELEBRATE. We celebrate triumphs, getting past difficult situations and accomplishments. At its core, we celebrate each other.

That is why I am so excited to celebrate one of my divinity circle sisters, Vanessa Loder, and her new book, The Soul Solution. Vanessa joined Sherry and me on the podcast this week and talked about her journey of self-awareness.
